OAK TREE LANE
I’ve been using lockdown to explore the housing estates of Stirchley, Kings Heath, Bournville and Selly Park. One of the things I have been enjoying most is looking at how cars, and especially garage blocks, are integrated into these estates.
In some instances, garages provide additional car parking for older generations of terraced housing, in others they are more thoughtfully integrated. In parts of Bournville many of the garages were either used as design features (Kingfisher Way) or at the rear of the housing as a way of prioritising pedestrians and green spaces over cars (Westholme Croft).
Many of the stand-alone garage blocks are now beginning to become run-down as they have fallen out of use. This blog is nothing more than photographs of garages, gathered over many lockdown walks, in an attempt to capture what is becoming a less familiar part of our suburban landscape.
